AN OPEN LETTER TO THE GOVERNOR OF ARIZONA

TO GOVERNOR JAN BREWER

The Nikkei for Civil Rights & Redress, an organization who fought for redress for victims of a shameful period in American history, condemns your signing of SB 1070. It is an act founded in racist hysteria with blatant pandering for votes at the expense of our Mexican American community.

Latino residents and other people of color will be the first to be targeted under this law. Not everyone has a passport and many juveniles and seniors do not have driver’s licenses, yet they could be held simply by your suspicion that they could be here illegally. This ill-advised measure will soon pit Arizona’s police against all Americans who do not fit the profile of White Anglo Saxon people.

We, of the NCRR, who fought for and cherish our American value of justice are repelled by this law. The Japanese American community was the target of the U.S. government’s racism resulting in the unconstitutional and unnecessary incarceration. Your surrender to the forces of racism and hysteria for their votes is inexcusable and cowardly!

We urge you to rescind this law and return the State of Arizona to sanity and the Governor’s Office to some sense of respectability!
