Frank Emi

Frank Emi, a native of Southern California, was a successful grocer before World War II.  All was lost when he and his wife and child were forced to move to the concentration camp at Heart Mountain in 1942.  After the U.S. government initiated the draft for camp internees, Frank became a leader of the Heart Mountain Fair Play Committee.  Frank and the other FP members refused induction into the army during their unconstitutional imprisonment.  He was tried and convicted of fighting the draft and spent 18 months at the Leavenworth Federal Penitentiary until his conviction was overturned on appeal.  For his courage in standing up to the government and for his active participation in the redress movement, NCRR awards Frank Emi the Fighting Spirit Award!
