Program Summary
With awareness and momentum growing for redress and reparations, NCRR organized an ambitious Day of Remembrance candlelight procession and program.  More than fifteen NCRR and JACL members and other volunteers worked together to form logistics, publicity, program, and outreach committees.  It was a true grassroots effort.

Posters announcing the United for Justice theme of DOR were taped in the windows of merchants in Little Tokyo, Gardena, and supermarkets in other areas of the city catering to Japanese Americans.  Posters and flyers were also delivered to churches, senior centers, universities, restaurants and libraries in Gardena, the San Fernando Valley, West Los Angeles, the San Gabriel Valley and Boyle Heights.  Presentations were made to church congregations and at community meetings.

The program committee recruited three generations of Japanese Americans to take part in the program: Issei performed the traditional Japanese shigin and Japanese dance; popular songs from the 1940’s were sung by the Nisei songbird of Manzanar, Mary Nomura; and the poetry and music of Sansei and Nisei generations were presented by Miya Iwataki, Phil Shigekuni, and Nancy Gohata.

The keynote address was given by NCRR national spokesperson Bert Nakano.  He talked about NCRR’s position on reparations, the many hours volunteers have devoted to the campaign, state workers who have received compensation, and the need to keep lobbying for redress.  Representative Mervyn Dymally spoke about the bills for individual monetary compensation and a community fund that he had introduced in Congress two months ago.  The media recognized his efforts.  JACL’s Harry Kajihara gave the closing remarks.  Japanese translation was coordinated by the Little Tokyo Service Center.

Approximately 500 persons attended.
